Introduction
Cassiopeia is the most played champion of me, and I played Cassiopeia more than 500 games, for 4 seasons. So I have many useful tips for playing Cassiopeia. Actually my rank is G4 on KR server, but still it can be useful for most of the players.
Runes
Sorcery & Domination Build
I prefer this rune setting for most cases.
Summon Aery vs Arcane Comet vs Phase Rush
Cassiopeia is a ranged DPS style mage champ. So you should use Twin Fang(E) very often and keep the distance between you and the enemy. For this, you should have faster movement speed than the enemy, and Phase Rush makes this very easy. You can use Summon Aery if you want deal more damage during laning phase, but it's not that useful. Don't use other runes, because it's not efficient for Cassiopeia.
Nullifying Orb vs Manaflow Band vs Nimbus Cloak
Actually you can choose anything in your preference. Nullifying Orb helps you to survive from AP nuker champions' combo. Manaflow Band gives you more mana, and it makes you be able to use more skills-offensively or defensively. Nimbus Cloak is not a common choice, but its movement speed increment helps you to escape from dangerous situations like gank and unbalanced teamfight.
Transcendence vs Celerity vs Absolute Focus
You can choose one between Transcendence and Celerity. It's related to your item build plan. For Cassiopeia, 30%+ of CDR(Cooldown Reduction) is recommended to improve its DPS. But there's not that many CDR items for AP mages currently. So if you're planning to buy one of those(Zhonya's Hourglass, Banshee's Veil, Shurelya's Reverie, Twin Shadows), then Transcendence will be a good choice. Otherwise Celerity is very useful for both movement speed and AP(Due to Cassiopeia's passive).
Scorch vs Waterwalking vs Gathering Storm
Scorch helps you to make kills during laning phase. Waterwalking makes you better on Rift Scuttler fight and roaming. Gathering Storm's massive AP increment on late game makes you much stronger on late game teamfight and object control. I usally choose Scorch when the opponent mid champ is stronger than me on late game(like Kassadin), so I should win on laning phase. Otherwise I choose Gathering Storm to improve my late game power. I chose Waterwalking 0 time, but it can be helpful if you prefer to roam.
Cheap Shot vs Taste Of Blood vs Sudden Impact
Cheap Shot has 4s cooldown, but Cassiopeia is a DPS style mage. So cooldown of 4s is too long for Cassiopeia. And also you should use Miasma(W) or Petrifying Gaze(R) to use the rune's effect. It's not that common case. You only can activate Sudden Impact when you use Flash, which has 300s cooldown. So Taste Of Blood will be the best choice for Cassiopeia. If you don't need it, then consider using Ghost Poro or Eyeball Collection on second line.
Ravenous Hunter vs Ingenious Hunter vs Relentless Hunter vs Ultimate Hunter
Just choose Ravenous Hunter. Because it gives you a lots of health with Twin Fang(E)'s effect, and that's the reason why you chose Domination build. Otherwise move to next section and consider Inspiration build.
Sorcery & Inspiration Build
For stronger laning phase, choose this build.
Transcendence vs Celerity vs Absolute Focus
Because you'll choose Time Warp Tonic, Celerity is recommended to increase AP and get more kill chance. But please still mind about making 30%+ CDR.
Scorch vs Waterwalking vs Gathering Storm
This rune build focuses on laning phase, so choose Scorch.
Future's Market vs Minion Dematerializer vs Biscuit Delivery
Future's Market makes you to buy Tear of the Goddess easily on first recall. Otherwise it's almost useless. Minion Dematerializer increases your lane clear ability, which makes you to roam properly. You can use this if you want to roam a lot. But I recommend Biscuit Delivery, because you get Time Warp Tonic's 20% duration bonus. And its movement speed bonus is also applied to biscuits. So you'll be faster(which means more AP if you selected Celerity) when you used a biscuit. Also Cassiopeia lacks of mana. So biscuits will help you.
Cosmic Insight vs Approach Velocity vs Time Warp Tonic
Cosmic Insight is very useful for Cassiopeia, because it gives you 5% CDR even for spells. But you if you want to play aggressively in laning phase, Time Warp Tonic will be the best choice for you. Cassiopeia often purchase Corrupting Potion for stronger laning phase, and duration of Corrupting Potion is affected by Time Warp Tonic's ability. So you can use Corrupting Potion very efficiently when you use Time Warp Tonic.
Spells
First spell is forced to Flash. Because Cassiopeia's tank stats are bad and her skill range is really short, so she should use Flash to escape from dangerous situations easily. And you can also use Flash for Petrifying Gaze(R)-Flash combo to use ult from longer distance, without casting motion and delay.
For second spell, You can choose one of these.
Heal: For most cases, you can choose this to survive from many dangerous situations.
Barrier: To survive from nukers' skill combo, use this.
Cleanse: When enemy midlaner/jungler has threatening CCs, this will help you.
Exhaust: If you can use Exhaust before the enemy uses nuking combo(like Zed, Fizz, Katarina), then this can be much better solution than Barrier.
Ghost: If enemy team has many champ that doesn't have any dashing skills, this will help you to always keep distance between you and enemies.
Teleport: If you are going top. This is essential for roaming with TP and lane management.
Skills
For the most case, this skill tree is the best.
If enemy midlaner/jungler has threatening dash skills, choose W on level 3. Others are always same.
Items
Starting Item
There's three choices. 2 Health Potions + Doran's Ring, Corrupting Potion, Refillable Potion + Sapphire Crystal.
2 Health Potions + Doran's Ring is the most common choice. If you don't think other starting item is needed, just choose this.
Corrupting Potion makes you stronger in laning phase. If you chose Sorcery & Inspiration build, you'll want to buy this item.
Refillable Potion + Sapphire Crystal is not the common choice. But I really like this because it makes you to buy a Tear of the Goddess at first recall easier. This item build is invented because of 2 changes: the price of Tear of the Goddess is increased to 850G from 750G, the unique passive of Doran's Ring is changed-or nerfed. Because of these two changes, Doran's Ring doesn't give you a better laning phase before first recall, and it's harder to buy a Tear of the Goddess at first recall. So this build became very useful.
Common Item Tree
Seraph's Embrace - Rylai's Crystal Scepter - Liandry's Torment - Void Staff - Rabadon's Deathcap - Other is used for most case.
Before 1st Core: PLEASE BUY TEAR OF THE GODDESS
1st Core: Seraph's Embrace vs Rod of Ages
I usually choose Seraph's Embrace for most case. Because it has 20% CDR, which is very important for Cassiopeia. For Cassiopeia, higher CDR increases her DPS and dealing stability dramatically. But if you should deal damage while you are also damaged, or enemies' damage is too strong, choosing Rod of Ages will help you to survive.
2nd Core: Rylai's Crystal Scepter vs Zhonya's Hourglass vs Banshee's Veil vs Shurelya's Reverie vs Morellonomicon vs Liandry's Torment vs Seraph's Embrace
If there's (an) assassin champion(s), buying appropriate defense item for enemy is essential. If enemy is AD, buy Zhonya's Hourglass. If enemy is AP, buy Banshee's Veil. If enemy is hybrid, just increasing health with Rylai's or Liandry's or Morellonomicon also can be a good choice. Choose items based on your situation.
In normal case, Rylai's Crystal Scepter will be the best choice for you. It gives you some AP and health. Additionally, it slows down enemy when you attack enemy with skill.
If there's (a) champ(s) that highly relies on health regen(like Dr. Mundo, Vladimir, Soraka, Swain), buying Morellonomicon can be a best choice because of its unique passive.
If you want to play aggressively or you should initiate teamfight, Shurelya's Reverie will be a good choice. Its active ability makes you to initiate teamfight easily without Flash.
If enemy has lots of tankers, Liandry's Torment will help you to deal more damage to tankers.
If you bought Rod of Ages for 1st core, you should buy Seraph's Embrace.
3rd Core: Liandry's Torment vs Spellbinder vs Void Staff vs Rabadon's Deathcap
Most common choice is Liandry's Torment. It increases your damage vs tankers.
If you want to play aggressively and end game early, buying Spellbinder will improve your damage while you activated the item. It works like old Deathfire Grasp for Cassiopeia.
If enemy bought lots of magic resist items, choosing Void Staff is essential.
If you are growing much faster than others, buying Rabadon's Deathcap will be a critical choice to end the game.
4th Core: Void Staff vs Rabadon's Deathcap
Simple. If enemies don't have any magic resist items, or if you already have Void Staff, just buy Rabadon's Deathcap. Otherwise buy Void Staff.
5th Core: Rabadon's Deathcap vs Others
If you don't have Rabadon's Deathcap yet, buy it. Otherwise buy items based on your needs. Just pick one of the 2nd core recommendations.
6th Core: Others
Same as 5th core's "Others" option. Oh, and if you REALLY want Hextech Gunblade, you can buy it. But not recommended. If you really don't have any items to buy, these are items with low efficiency but not zero:
Hextech Gunblade, Twin Shadows, Spirit Visage, Frozen Heart, Guardian Angel, Dead Man's Plate
Gameplay Tips
Early Game(Laning Phase)
Before buying Tear of Goddess at first recall, Cassiopeia really lacks of mana. So you should mind about mana management. Cassiopeia can take CS using Twin Fang(E) without losing mana if you use that for last hit. You can take CS easily with autoattack+Twin Fang(E) because it deals a lot. You should mind about gank because Cassiopeia don't have any dash skill. So buying some Control Wards can be very useful.(Actually, you should buy lots of Control Wards if you are a midlaner!!!!!) You can harass enemy with Noxious Blast(Q). If Q hits and there's not so many enemy minions, you can use some Twin Fang(E)s until enemy reaches to the turret. If you shot 2 Twin Fang(E)s, then Phase Rush will be activated and it allows you to use more Twin Fang(E)s.
After the first recall, you will have a lot more mana. This means you can hardly push enemy laner to deny from ally minions. Cassiopeia has 2 long-ranged skills(Noxious Blast(Q), Miasma(W)) so you can harass enemy very easily and safely. You can just use Q or use some Twin Fang(E)s to deal more damage if you are safe. To hit Q, catch the timing that enemy laner is attacking minions. Every champions of League should stop to do autoattacks. So use Noxious Blast(Q) at this time to hit enemy laner easily.
Actually, roaming ability of Cassiopeia is little bad, because she can't buy boots because of her passive. Also her lane pushing ability also not that good and it needs lots of mana. But Cassiopeia is good at covering for roaming of the enemy laner. So clear minion waves as fast as you can and move fast for better covering.
Mid Game(Split Push)
At mid game, Cassiopeia has good mobility because of her passive(ironically). And Cassiopeia has good 1vs1 ability if you use skills appropriately. And Cassiopeia doesn't have any skills for initating, so there's no reason to stay on the mid lane. So just go to the side lanes(choose the lane you want to go based on the situations like Baron Nashor/Dragon gen time). If a fight has started, move to the place where the fight was occurred. Cassiopeia is a DPS mage, so you should be able to deal as long as you can. Teamfight tips are included in the next paragraph.
Late Game(5vs5 Teamfight)
Before do a teamfight, you should think about enemy's dangerous skills, especially CCs. You should roughly think about usages of skills, spells and active items. If enemy team has threatening dash skills, or if you can make enemy unable to take advantages of the skills that enemy has(Ex: Kalista can't do auto attack on Miasma(W)), you should use Miasma(W) for it. Miasma(W) is a really powerful skill. Using it correctly is very important on teamfight. Also you should use Petrifying Gaze(R) properly. You can use it against enemy bruisers like Riven. Or just use it to hit enemies as many as you can. There's not that many chances to use it and stun many enemies. So just use it bold and aggressively.
During teamfight, you should on the same line with ally ADC. Cassiopeia is not tanky and can die very easily. So just deal starting from enemy tanks. DPS of Cassiopeia is really high and top tier even on all league champs, especially on AP mages. So just deal. But if you can hit enemy dealers, use skills on them. Cooldown of Cassiopeia's skills are relatively short, and Twin Fang(E) has only 0.5~0.7s of cooldown! So just use it a lot! But while Noxious Blast(Q)'s cooldown is also very short, use it very carefully, because you will have 1/2 to 1/3 DPS when you missed it-because it increases the damage of E.
In teamfight, focusing right target is very important. Good target to focus for Cassiopeia is tanks and bruisers that are trying to kill ally ADC. Most important part of late game teamfight is protecting ADC-even Cassiopeia has very good DPS, ADCs usally has good passive skills for carrying late game teamfight. Otherwise(Ex: Ally ADC is Ezreal - Ezreal has low DPS than Cassiopeia and also has Arcane Shift(E) so he can survive very easily) just focus on your surviving and deal carefully.
Conclusion
Cassiopeia has very good deal potential. So use this to get massive profits. Hardly push enemy with your skills and lead the game. If game is not going well, don't give up. Cassiopeia has very good late game damage potential. You can reverse the game with one fantastic teamfight. Don't give up and don't surrender!!!
